My first WSOP - Cashed in the Seniors Event #30

Wrote this note upon my return but felt a little shy posting it – what the hell…

Just got back from my trip to Vegas last night and had a blast. It didn’t hurt that I cashed in my first WSOP Event!

Once at Bally’s I took the advice of ottawaplayer and tried the $ 20 upgrade idea. It was funny because once I got in line to check in I realized I didn’t know exactly how to do it. Do I say ‘ what can you do for me for $20? ’ or just slide the 20 across the counter and hope for the best? Luckily for me I decided that the best approach was to ask about whether my room in the South Tower was nice while just casually holding a $20 in my hand resting on the counter. It worked and I ended up on the 20th floor of the North Tower with a great view and amazing room! I handed the $ 20 over and said ‘I hope you are able to accept my appreciation for your help.’ Thank you ottawaplayer!!

Day 1: Sitting at my starting table and looking out to the sea of tables all I could say to myself was “one table at a time”…so many people to get through (3,751 of them).

It was motivating and I felt proud to hear the Canadian National Anthem at the start of the tourney to commemorate Canadian Daniel Idema for winning Event # 27 - Limit Hold’em.

I wish I could have stayed at my starting table the whole time – the players (all men) were friendly and my table image was strong. I took down a lot of pots and knocked a guy out early. After about 4 hours I was moved to a much tougher table – bigger stacks, more aggressive guys. I decided to play more tightly and try and ride out the storm until I got moved. This worked out well and I was able to add a little to my stack before getting moved to my 3rd and final table of the day where there sat a really cute old guy in seat 2. He was aggressive, took his time and made lots of funny and pained expressions as he decided whether or not to fold to raises and re-raises. I was really hoping he would get through to the money and wasn’t surprised to see that he made it to the final table finishing 8th (Walter Shawne Browne) $57,608. These old guys are so smart!!

On Day 2 it took about 2 hours for us to make it into the money. The room was sooo quiet until when after about 40 minutes of hand-to-hand it was announced that we had made it into the money. Whew hew!! My stack was on the short side and so I had to get busy. I wound up finishing in the 2nd tier of cash at 288th and received $ 2,059 cash (no withholding because it was under $5,000). Game over. Wow! The people who staked me will be happy - I had sold 60% of my action!!

To quote my friend’s post on FaceBook: Sherry got through yesterdays World Series of Poker record-setting starting field of 3752 players in the WSOP Seniors Event. She finished 288th winning $2059 just a few moments ago.

I was going to play the multiple WPT events at Fallsview, but now that the AGCO seems to have cancelled them, maybe I'll just stick to online.

Congrats! Hope next year you come back with a bigger score

And the "$20 trick", I usually just sandwich it between my credit card and drivers license when I check in, and just bring up whether there is any complimentary upgrades available. I have gotten anywhere from just from a room with no view to a room with view of the strip, to a regular room and had it upgraded to one of the suites. When I was there over New Years I didn't bother even trying since I knew the hotels would be booked solid.

And glad you were there for Dan's bracelet ceremony, he's a great guy so really happy to see him win it after he finished 2nd in the same event last yr.
