WPT Fallswview Step Q trip report - long.

I arrived at the poker room yesterday at 11:50, only to see a line of about 30 people there. Some were in line for cash game so my name was 15th on the list. I thought this might be quite a wait as there was only one dealer there at the tables. To Fallsviews credit by 12:30 they had opened a second table and we had cards in the air by 1:00. They had 5 tables of Q satellites going all night.

This table was full of the usual pro players with two of them buying in for cash. I used the voucher I won back in August. This table was very tight. We played for almost two hours before losing the first player and at the break we still had 8, losing one on the last hand before the break. I didn’t play many hands in the first two hours and at the break I had 4500 in chips. I won a lot of hand by C betting after the flop. The only memorable hand was having AA in the SB with a raiser in the cutoff. The blinds were 50, 100. He made it 275, I called and so did the BB. Flop comes J, 3, 4 rainbow. BB showed no interest and the cutoff C bet 650, I raised to 1800 BB folded and with a lot of thought, showboating, cutoff folded.

Since this table was so tight one of the short stack pros was moving in with every second hand pre-flop. This worked very well for him as everyone who stood up to him lost. He became the chip leader very quickly. The suck-out king! About 3 hours into the game I was down to 2700 chips with 4 players left. Suck-out king moves all in again on my BB. I look down at QQ and call. He tables K 10 and the flop comes with two kings. I stand up. I felt I could have won that table if I won that hand.

I waited for my name to be called by playing some 2/5NL. The next game was called at 5:30. This was basically the same group of players from the first game, less the suck-out king. One added player was a young guy named Dan and tight aggressive player named Guy. I knew to stay away from these players without a good hand. Dan already has two WSOP seats; Guy has three second place finishes. I buy in with cash as does one other player and the rest are vouchers.

Cards in the air at 5:50. I won the button. First orbit I didn’t play a hand. In the second orbit I found AQ back to back. Raised the first hand and won with a C bet, didn’t hit anything. The next hand I raised to 175 (blinds were 25/50) and had two callers. Flop came Q, 7, 6 with two hearts. I bet 375 and was raised to 675. I re-popped him to 1200. He folded. The very next hand I have A,8 of hearts in the near the button and it is folded to me. I didn’t like the idea of raising 3 hands in a row. I like the image of a tight image, so I let it go. Flop comes A, 8, 8, the winner won with 8,7 off in the BB. I have around 4500 in chips.

The next blind level I remember a hand was 100, 200. There were a lot of short stacks at the table. I middle position I raise with AJ suited to 675. I get one caller and the cash buying pro moves in for an additional 1050. I looked at the original caller and he looked very disappointed to have to call an additional raise. I moved in to isolate. The Pro tables AA and I am in trouble. This was half of my stack. I looked at the dealer and said flop me the straight. Flop was K,Q, 10. Dealer said your welcome. I definitely got lucky there.(suck-out)! I slowed down my game for the next half hour and by the break we were down to three players with me being the short stack 6K in chips. That was very quick to have only three players at the first break. Over the next two hours Dan, Guy and I traded the chip lead several times. I had Dan all in two times with the best hand. Both times he doubled up through me. Guy was a very solid player and always hovered around 7-10K in chips. After 4 hours of play we were still 3 with basically even in chips.

We started level 9, 500, 1000 with 200 ante. I was the chip leader with 17 K in chips. Again it was back an forth for this level and it seemed like no one willing to commit to a hand with out the nuts. Dan eliminated Guy in third after both of us ground Guy down to only 4K in chips. 77 versus A3. We did a count of chips and I had 16750 and Dan had 14250. He offered me a deal to take 4K in cash and the replay voucher. I didn’t accept as I was the chip leader and I wanted the seat. I didn’t have the cash to offer him a deal so, I said play on.

With the blinds 800, 1600 with a 300 ante, he limped in and I had KK. I checked ( I want to double up. Flop was J, 10, 6 with two spades. He checked and I fired 4000. After a fair bit of acting he moved in. I was sure he didn’t have J,10. He might have a spade draw, but with the way the whole game was played, it was not a move he would make. I called and he showed QQ. I survived. Three hands later he chipped up again and

I had 18000 in chips. He raised to 4500 in and I had KK. I re-raised him and he folded. I felt that if I were to loose this was the hand I misplayed the worst. I offered him 1800 in cash and the second place voucher. He said it was not enough. Play on then since that was all the money had.

The next hand he was in the BB and I raised all in with AQ. If he folded he would have only had 4 K left. He called with Q 8. and spiked a 8. Dan the cat with 9 lives! He managed to get to enough chips to get to above me. I had 13K in chips. He called the BB, I had 8,7 off. The flop came K, J, 7 with two clubs. He bet 1600, I called. Turn was 7 of clubs. He checked. I thought he hit his flush. I checked. River was an 8. He moved in and I called. He had his flush and prematurely celebrated, until he noticed what I had.

The next hand I had AJ off and moved in. He called with 10, 8 off. On the flop he spiked a 8 again on the flop. The river was a J and I am playing the main event! The time was 11:40.

This game lasted almost 6 hours. This Q satellite was designed to be at most 4.5 hours. Hats off to Dan, a very tough opponent.

Also props to Fallsview, they ran the room very well last night. 5 tables running and no flaws!

Congrats Rob! Any idea when they'll stop running the $460s? And I'm assuming these are going to be ran around the clock soon? (Looking for 13Cards to answer)

Congratulations. A couple of other players who participated in the rake-free satellites with the Step Q structure and went to play the $1,240 casino satellite have also won the $10,300 seats!
