AQ first position

I have a question:

If I have AQ suited and I am 2nd to act how much should I raise IF any? The blinds are 1/2$ in a nl game with the average schip stack at $200. I always find myself in situations where I second guess a hand and position like this one. Maybe I should just smooth call...? But what do I do if there is a raise? Do I isolate?

Re: AQ first position

Well, firstly, switch it up - occasional smooth call is fine.

Having said that, I like to raise... and here, probably 3-4x BB seems right - so in a 1/2 game? I'm guessing upwards of 8-10 bucks.. but of course, this all depends on blah blah blah (table image / loose players / yadda yadda)

Standard poker question answer....

"It depends"

Is the guy a maniac, or has he been quietly sitting there for the last hour? Boils down to two major questions really

A: Do you think you have him beat?

B: Do you think that you can outplay him / get him off his hand?

Come play with Shopsy, Folded, pkrfce9, Blazin 72, ItsaMe, and others, you will see a variety of ways to see AQ played.

Two things:

A: Not all of which are necessarily the right way

and

B: What, I didn't make the list?

First, is there a right way -- when Shopsy can get Folded to fold 2 pair and then find Shopsy's cards in the muck and see he was bluffed by a Jack 2 offsuit.Â*

Second, When is the last time you played a 1/2 NL game with us.Â* LOL

1/2 game?

I believe it's time to break out an old para-phrase....

"Remember all, betting $10 in a 1/2NL game with Shopsy and The Prophet 22? Well, that's just like checking!"

$10 after the flop in a 1/2 game with those guys is checking. I'd expect a $30 reraise coming quick.....

Re: AQ first position

AQ is a little bit of a trouble hand. That being said, I will open with it, for a raise, in any position if it's been folded to me. At the $1/$2 NL 6 max game on Party I will open for 4xBB + 1BB per limper in front of me. At the 1/2 nl Casino Niagara I will typically open for between $10-$20, depending on what the standard raise has been and what I have been raising too.

If I open from the SB or BB I am typically going to raise a little more since I have a positional disadvantage to face.

What do you do when someone raises? Typically call, occasionally fold and occasionally reraise. This depends entirely on the openers raising range, which is something you can find out pretty easily if you keep your eyes open.

Re: AQ first position

this is the problem....that is with lower limit poker in 1/2$ blinds you cannot play book poker. I mean if you were playing in a high stakes game and bet 5 times the BB you most likely would gain respect. You could even put your calling opponent on a hand. However, I play with fools that since its just $10 they will call you with 72 os just for the HOPES of busting you. My point is you cannot put someone on a hand...if you dont bet out like $40 you will not truly know what kind of hand your opponants have and what you are dealing with.

Re: AQ first position

Well, since it seems to be the answer you hand in mind... you should raise to $40 pre-flop. That'll work for sure.

/g2

P.S. AQ is garbage, suited or not. Q10... now that's a hand! 78 is okay too.

Re: AQ first position

AQ is not a great NL cash hand, how are you going to stack someone with AQ? You aren't. I'll take 56s anyday in a deep game over AQ, and I'll call a larger raise with 56s against the right player if we both have 20x the raise infront of us.

Make a standard raise and dump if there is too much pressure behind you.
