Station Poker Classic Tournament

Hey Dave,

I'm heading out to play in the Station Classic in a couple of weeks, from Toronto, and I was wondering if you have any advice. This is my first live tournament with more than 3 tables. I realize that's a pretty general question lol, but I know you've done well there so I'll take any advice you have to offer. I'm staying at the Delta, which I'm pretty sure is connected to the casino, so that's cool. I'm playing the limit and no-limit hold'em tourneys.

I mostly play online, and managed to bank 50K US in the last little while as a result of playing exclusively 25/50 limit shorthanded, a lot. I'm taking a break from the stress of it now, and I plan to spend a chunk of it on live tournament play. Any other good tourneys in the $100 to $1000 buy-in range that I should definitely attend? Any advice at all that you have for me about general multi-table tournament strategy, or about anything in Regina would be great.

Regards,
all_aces

ps: my live tourney results are just OK... placed 5th (out of the money) twice in 3-table Kitchener tourneys, and 1st in a $100 buy-in 10-person tourney I'm going to run every 6 weeks or so, now that I have a table!

Wow, you are rocking online! 8) What site/s are you playing?

I would be interested in attending one of your touney's for sure, I'm sure I would learn a thing or two watching you. How long have you been playing?

You may want to check out the blue heron casino(.com) in Port Perry. Thay have $50 sit n go's every wednesday and a $120 tourney about once a month..

I too am at the Delta. I will be playing all four tournaments. Knock me out and you get a Canadian Poker Player ball cap. Bounty!

And you want my advice?

Take in the WSOP. Play on or two of the early events.

Regina runs a great tournament. The Regina Poker Classics are an excellent introduction to "big" tournament poker. Do I have any advice for you? Yes... if I raise your blinds then fold... I have the goods.

Seriously, the fields in Regina have gotten a lot tougher over the years. There are a lot of skilled and dangerous players in the field.

esool: I've been playing for about 5 years now. I made the big money playing at the very fishy (in a good way) pokerroom.com. I deposited $36 through 900Pay and managed to run it way up there by moving up in levels every time I had 20X BB (not optimal...) and playing exclusively shorthanded games. I was lucky to make enough to sit in the 25-50 game, and didn't budge from there for a few months... Port Perry sounds very cool, I'll have to check it out sometime. It's a lot closer than Regina!

Dave: I'll be honest with you, I'm going after the hat. The concensus seems to be that the field in Regina is pretty tough... I've heard that a few times. I think I'm gonna get my ass kicked, but I'm still really looking forward to it. I assume there's a lot of side-game action as well, so if I bust out at least I'll have something to do. I'd like to play in the lower buy-in WSOP tourneys, maybe a sat. or 2 to the big one as well, as I've never been to Vegas.

GL to you in the Classic and in the WSOP, and for the love of God, don't steal my blinds!

Introudce yourself in Regina.

There are still lots of soft spots in the lineup. If you go back seven years it used to almost exclusively local players. Now I am sure that over half of the field is from out of town -- MN, ND, SD, Man, Sask, Alta, BC. Not all of the out of town players are strong, but they are generally at least "OK" if they are making the trip year after year. I have seen more and more mid-limit workaday pros attending each time.

There is lots of side action. Certainly lots at the $20-40 level. Games as high as $50-100. There is no "big bet" poker. The SLGC will not permit it (as I understand it).
