UTG raising

just curious to hear some opinions on UTG raising. i've read before that an UTG raise should be a little smaller than average (like 2 to 2.5 BBs) since there are so many people still left to act that if you get reraised you can let go of the hand without losing too much.

on the other hand, i've heard the opposite that raising larger UTG suggests that you have a big hand and will deter others from reraising and pushing you off the hand.

it obviously matters about the general style of play at the table among other factors, but i'd still like to hear what other's general opinions about UTG raising.

(side note: there is the assumption that you have some sort of hand and are not attempting to "steal" or bluff)

Always min-raise from UTG. Nobody will call

Seriously, I try to go 3x unless I'm stuck with a low M.

You should determine your UTG raise based on what you want to do with your hand on the flop or with others in the hand after you.

Depending on table dynamics I will usually limp/fold small pocket pairs as it seems to slow action down (people thing you have a big hand). This usually works well with a tight table.

Any premium hands on a tight table I will raise 3-4x the BB. That usually allows you to define callable hand ranges etc....based on player types.

In a looser table UTG I may raise a little bigger with a premium pocket pair as I am hoping for a shove because I figure my range is greater than a looser tables range.

Once again UTG raises are normally dependant on the table and what you are prepared to do post flop with your hand....
