Fundraiser Poker Tourney?

Just wanted to get some information and input.

I'm planning to hold a fundraiser poker tourney for my dragon boat club (http://www.paddlersanonymous.com/index.html). We're a non-profit organization, hosting 4 dragon boat teams this year. University students & young professionals are the core of our team. We have registration fees for all members. We try to cut down cost by fundraisers throughout the year.

I'm not exactly sure where to start. I'm expecting approximately 40-60 people (depending on location) with a low buy-in of no more than $50.00, possibly low as $20.00. It looks like some of you have setup fundraising tournaments before and I'm wondering how this should be setup in terms of % to our dragon boat club and % payout. Also were to start looking for maybe sponsors with small prizes since the payout wouldn't be 100%, as well as possible cheap locations as this is a fundraiser.

Any input & information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Fundraiser Poker Tourney?

I checked in with the gov of BC as to holding a poker tounry strickly for charity. Our plan was to give all the money to city family programs. I thought that it would be ok seeing all the money goes to the city and the prizes would be donated. After checking I recieved a very nasty email from the BC Goverment saying not a chance.

I don't quit get it seeing no one would profit.

We also had know of a pool hall the did what you wanted and they got shut down after the first night.

Good luck and keep it small and quite.

Did you check out the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (http://www.agco.on.ca)?
