who was right? who was wrong?

very early stages of 6 man ultra turbo tourney, I just crippled a player who is forced all in next hand. I hold chip lead 2:1 over everyone else.

I have 9-10, flop comes J-9-9, I am first to act so I shove it all in to say "I got it". The other player calls and puts himself all in too. He flips over Q-J giving him two pair. The turn is a J and he takes it down. FH over FH.

Did I deserve to be punished there? Should I have just followed the "code" of checking it down to knock a guy out even with trips? Was he wrong to call?
I have been in his position many times before where someone has lead out a huge bet with a chance to knock someone out and I always fold because that tells me he has a monster and is certain he'll finish the other off.

EDIT: ironically enough, we ended up taking the 1&2 spots for the cashes with me finishing 2nd

Depends on the size of the pot/his stack as to whether or not he was "wrong" to call, since he didn't know you had trips already.
Automatically checking it down to knock a player out is only really applicable in the later stages of a tournament, when the elimination will directly affect prize money. Otherwise your best strategy is going to be to accumulate chips any way you can, and flopping trips is as good a way as any to do so.

damned near 8/10ths of a starting stack. I think the pot had 20 chips in it and he called his remaining 1,300

I mean, I was very happy he called until that turn came (obviously)

He called a massive overbet? That can't be right no matter the format <.<

Why didn't you just go for standard raises?

Yeah, he dove right in, no hesitation whatsoever.
I threw out the huge bet just to get it over with, knock that guy out and move along. Blinds were 2 minutes, no time to fuck around.

If he folds QJ to you on this flop you've lost a ton of value so try playing it for maximum value next time. As for the question he was obviously very very wrong since he got his chips in drawing almost dead but I really think you were wrong to shove this instead of playing the hand to the best of your ability
