I'm on the button with As Js. Few limpers. All fold except guy to my right (average stack). Flop come AJ3. He bets I raise big. He calls. Turn a 7. Again he bets I raise hugh. He calls. River Q. He bets, I raise he calls. Yep, he has K10 offsuit. My stack devastated...... Calling stations like this (no matter how aggressive you are) suck out on me often in the low buy-ins.... And I'm certain if I had gone all-in on flop he would have called (had history in last few hands.....)
Back to the MTTs......
A somewhat similar thing happened to me yesterday.

I was playing the low (0.10) buy in MTT on stars yesterday while I was playing one of the 1 table 3.40 buy ins on stars. I had K T suited and the flop hit with a rainbow 9 7 T. I checked, as did everyone else. Next card was K. No flush or straights for anyone that I could see. Maybe a straight draw, but I bet anyway. Everyone folds but one guy, who calls. He, from his history, was calling crazy stuff, so I decided to put him all-in. He called and flipped over K 9 os. River comes up with a 9.

Again, this is a good reason why I am going to stick to playing only AA-KK-QQ-JJ, limp in with lower pairs and suited connectors to catch hidden hands sometimes, and play AK according to position. I was playing a lot more hands in the MTT game this time and it didn't seem to work.

Either way, I was doing well in the 9 man SNG game. I came 4th this time, so not in the money, but I was still doing well. I also played 2 heads up SNG and won both. I think I like heads up best.

But yeah, I would like to get better at MTT's for sure. I think I need to research them more. Any advice on any of the MTT questions in here would be greatly appreciated. What types of starting hands do you feel comfortable playing and what starting hands seem to work? Should you be risking more at the beginning of an MTT, or should you be very tight at the beginning? Is it still good to be tight and very aggressive when you hit a big hand?

Thanks. I must have missed compuease's post somehow, but thank you both. I tend to write pretty much everything I am thinking, haha. It helps me a lot though. You'll likely see a lot of me.

From just reading/skimming your posts thus far, it appears as though you are being too result oriented with the way you play...try to focus on making the right decision and getting your money ahead, versus looking at the result of the hand.

Finally

Well finally made it to the final table on Pokerstars! Required lots of patience, a few nice runs of cards, winning the occasional race (especially those that I was behind on), and a few bluffs when blinds were high. Finally lost in a race where I went in with best hand, but buddy rivered the straight. Placed 7th. Was very happy with my play this morning. Mixing it up, playing TAG, being occasionally LAG when table dynamics allowed seemed to work best for me. Thanks for advice fellas. Hope to make more and more final tables in future.
Update
Make that 2 final tables out of 5 tournies today. Placed 6th in this one. Seem to have found what works for me:-)

It may be the best writing in the history of poker...but I'll never know, nor will anyone else.

Two paragraphs or less is the norm Adpro...we've got the attention spans of 4 year olds who've lost their ritalin up in here.

Nice!! What stakes were you playing for? Care to post some hands or advice? What hands were you playing? How often did you raise and what hands did you raise? Did you go in with any different thoughts?

Lol, I am the same way, but I seem to love to type long messages. I assure you it isn't the best writing in the history of poker. I'm still a beginning myself.

No problem. I still need to apply a lot of what I say to the way I play, haha!
