I'm using 1280x 1024 now with a 19" CRT monitor. It's when I go higher than that my eyes hurt. I don't have the desk space for 2 monitors.

Definately change to a 19" LCD then, you get more viewing area on a similar sized LCD than a CRT, you save a tonne of space and the picture is that much better. Also when looking for a monitor keep the contrast ratio in mind, the higher the contrast ratio the better. Look for monitors with a ratio of at leat 450:1/500:1.
