Paddy Power Poker droppin Canadian accounts now....

Okay I got this shocker from Paddy Power Poker today:

Username: Turtleknife

Dear Marty,

It has come to our attention that you are using a Canadian bank card. In accordance with Canadian law we will now be unable to take bets from Canada. Due to this, we will unfortunately have to block your debit/credit card and in turn close your account. You will still be able to withdraw any outstanding funds from your account for the next seven days. Please contact our support team if you require any assistance.

From 12pm GMT (Monday 14th February 2011), we will no longer be able to accept payments from Canadian sources.

We appreciate your custom and hope that your experience with paddypower.com was an enjoyable one. If you have any questions about this decision or your account in general please feel free to contact our Customer Service team using the details below.

Best Wishes,

Paddy Power Customer Service Team

Well it is news to me that any poker legislation was new or changed recently in Canada, so I asked them to refer me to the law or announcement by any Canadian government body that that states anything about an anti-gambling law - recent or otherwise. The rep claimed he was not a lawyer. Thanks.

I then asked if Paddy Power Poker was going to make a press release about this move and if they could direct me to a public statement they have made on this. They do not have one, so he could not give me a link.

I think something is really fishy here, but either way I took my lousy $500 bucks out immediately.

Anybody else have any clue as to why they would be doing such a thing?

Could be... the REAL problem is if this extends to other networks based on a legitimate legal issue.

When BC added online poker one of the sites I was on dropped all Canadian players with the same BS excuse.

Really don't think there is anything to the "legal issue".

When BC added poker, "that network" dropped all Canadian account holders from the network because they were the ones providing the software and support for the BC site.

From what I've read about it, "that network" has signed an agreement which makes them the only software provider authorized to provide provincially-taxed online poker in Canada and as such, decided to remove all Canadian players from the international network.

Paddy Power is on the iPoker network, so if they are pulling out of Canada, that might mean a large number of sites will soon be pulling out as well. Titan Poker, Winner Poker, William Hill, Chili Poker and about 60 more sites make up the iPoker network, so this might turn into a very big deal.

I'm very interested to see where this goes. :-/

BCLC does not have poker included yet, but looks like it will join with Quebec soon.

Thanks for the clarification Blonde.

I thought Playnow was already offering poker when they launched and had all of those security flaws. Didn't realize it was casino only at that time.
