Techno newb is cutting the cable

Okay, so Rogers has finally pushed me over the edge. After a long and most amicable business arrangement where they send me a monthly bill and I pay it, they decided this month to send a bill for TWO monthly cycles, including a month for which I have not yet used any of their services. After poking holes in the various explanations I was given as to why they were doing this after all these years (including the fact that they were NOT doing this with our home phone service), and finding them totally unwilling to do anything to rectify the situation, I have decided that this current bill will be our last. This gives me about a month to come up with a solution to our TV and internet needs.

Thoughts:

I have thought about going the Netflix route, but do not wish to give up the first run shows like AMC's Walking Dead.

Will probably have to upgrade my current decade old TV (not that this is a bad thing).

I have no idea what sort of bandwidth allotment we will need to cover everything.

  • I'm thinking of switching myself from cable to Bell's new Fibe bundle, so that is another option for you to consider.
  • Called them right away, but while they would be an upgrade for my internet, the TV side is lagging behind.

Hey Milo, I work at a Bell sales centre. PM me your phone number and I'll see what I can do. FIBE TV should be available where you are, I've had it since Feb of this year and have had no issues with it. Whole home PVR system, if you have more than one TV and you can access all of your on demand shows online, on any device.

All three services (Home Phone, unlimited internet and Fibe TV, with the same channels as Rogers VIP should run about $150 per month.

    No installation fees, no contract.
  • You will need

A decent TV- 40" LED HDTV's are now around $500. HDMI ports are the new Red-White-Yellow plugs. Get lots of those if you can.

A decent internet - check TekSavvy in your area, they have good speeds (I just changed last week) for solid prices / download caps. Mine is 35 Mb/s - which usually registers as 45 - and 300 gigs a month that I have never topped, and I use more internet than you for $50.

Sony interne t player - and the "1channel" app, which I think is like $5 one time. Easy interface, very user friendly, and new content on that 1channel app is available within 1/2 hour of it airing on tv. That means you can stream The Walking dead by like 9:30 if it ends at 9:00. This is an android device so it has other nifty perks on it too to download.

    Perks that aren't necessity;

Any sports packages you want. I get the GameCentre package $100 for the season, and the deal is you get all, non-local games in HD (more on that in a second). I'm assuming the other big sports have these similar packages.

Netflix ($8 / month) and Unblock-us ($7 / month). The latter allows for your internet access to be seen as an American user - meaning none of those "This video is not available in your country", and you get USA Netflix, and possibly the best? Because my internet is from the states that NHL package I mentioned there is NO local games (they must pick like, Hawaii or something), and I get all the games.

  • DJ, I will get back to you, although my initial response to Fibe is "meh" . . . lots of channels I do not need/want/use, and not much in the way of savings.

Mark, thanks, your previous posting on this stuff was what I am after, and probably wher I am heading. Not such a big sports guy anymore (MMA aside), but everything else sounds good. Might have to actually "learn" some stuff when all is said and done . . .
  • I got an offer through my condo for a Fibe "special offer" of $81/month so I phoned Bell to find out the details to see if I should switch from my Cogeco cable and Internet. However, Bell pulled a bait-and-switch and kept trying to sell me packages that I did NOT want that are almost twice the cost while refusing to give me written details of what exactly they are offering so I can compare it with my existing cable services. Contrary to the info below, I was told there is a non-waivable $50 installation fee and a two-year contract term with rip-off penalties. After the salesman kept ignoring what I was asking for, I eventually decided to get rid of some optional Bell services instead of paying for more! :p

I was transferred to a different department who then told me there would be a 30-day charge for removing services and that there is a charge for mailing me a bill monthly! :rage: I asked for a manager and the CRTC phone number to complain about these Bell rip-off charges. Instead of finding out the Fibe details, I will phone my cable company first to see if they have an offer to get rid of my last Bell services. What's worse is that the long frustrating call with Bell made me late to play a Sunday major. :arghh:

  • Haven't had tv service for over 8-10? years...the only sports I watch are MMA and I just download them after.

Other than that all you need is a laptop, a HDMI cable, a sound cable and to download VUZE (free) and go to eztv.it and thepiratebay -- I use this user's link on thepiratebay to get the latest shows ettv - TPB

To d/l MMA I also use thepiratebay...about to watch last nights fights, no spoilers

Try Torrentday. Seems to be less issues with files. Not that I find many on pb.

Wife watches TV. I'd be fine with getting rid of it. However, apparently hgtv is important.

    I'll show you on Thursday
  • Does XBMC work on a Wii? My family likes the Canadian news and kids channels, but I'm looking for better options than Bell and cable for our three TV screens.

  • i got rid of cable a long time ago. i just stream/download shows and movies.

i personally just have a CPU that is hooked up to my flatscreen tv. i pay for netflix and i use the media hint extension for firefox so i can access the american netflix (which has about 3 times more content).

not sure where you live, but i suggest using primus for internet connection if they're available in your area. i pay for the expensive connection (since i don't pay for cable), but upload speeds are decent and i get infinite bandwith which is great.

Switch to FIBE TV, wireless receivers, high speed fibre optic internet, the lowest package includes news and kids channels - all three services for less than $100 a month
  • I'm in Ancaster.

I'm on Cogeco Cable. It's 65 Meg connection speed. Max download/month is 375Gigabytes per month. I'm paying about $117/month after all charges and taxes.

Is there a better deal out there?

I usually use up about 350-375 Gigabytes per month of bandwidth. I could easily use more.

Does that include phone, internet and TV ? How many TV's do you have, what channels do you watch ? Do you need features on your phone, does this include long distance ?

For Home Phone, all the features, unlimited long distance, unlimited internet bandwidth, Fibe TV, good package - $105.10 per month. No contract, no installation

My Cogeco doesn't include any phone or TV. My land phone is only $10/month. I never watch TV.

When they say unlimited internet it's often really limited. What kind of bandwidth? What kind of latency?

// checking their website it's on 5Mbps and only 20Gig, Sometimes I use 20 gigs in a day.
  • , Sometimes I use 20 gigs in a day.

Jeez, I thought only Mark watched that much porn . . .:D
  • The amount people pay from the majors astounds me (Bell, Rogers, etc).

    acanac.net

They have several options, including home phone, tv etc. I just use them for basic dsl. But they have cable and high(er) speed dsl as well. I dunno how much I use but I am a pretty heavy user. A one hour HD tv show dl in 20-30 min, which is fine enough for me. I dl 2-3 hours of tv shows a week and 2-3 HD movies as well. There are always multiple devices connected and the internet is probably being used a min of 18 h per day. The basic is fine for me and still comes with unlimited dl. It is restricted to 5.5 mbps during the day and overnight is 11 mbps. I usually pick some movies to dl before going to bed and they are all ready to go in the morning. $39.95/month. The first year is $24.95. If anyone wants a referral LMK.

For TV I use Shaw Direct satellite. It cost me $60.75 per month until I added a second unit and now its $74.91. They usually run a Christmas special where the HDPVR unit is $199 but it comes with free install and $199 in an account credit so ie. it's free. My sister in law went with this two years ago and the guy actually showed up on Super Bowl Sunday and installed it = HERO.

I should really get around to consolidating my phone/TV/internet through acanac, which would knock quite a few bucks off my monthly costs.

However my parents do use the FIBE and they love it. I think it is a great setup if you have a lot of TVs. Dunno why two people in a house need 3 TVs but hard to tell old people anything. One of the most convenient features is the ability to access anything on the PVR on any TV.
  • I'm surprised no one has mentioned DISH IKS. Not a perfect solution but extremely good value for the money. Google is your friend.

There is no limit on our unlimited bandwidth. Speed depends on where you live. Ancaster is a funny area and doesn't have fibre in some areas yet. 5mbps is not going to cut it for you. The 20GB limit is what comes with the 5mbps but you can upgrade to 95GB or unlimited.

I don't understand. All the Bell Fibe offers I got have stated "installation for $49.95 when you sign up for a 2-year contract term." Bell will charge "$249.95 with no contract term."

I would need to buy an HD wireless receiver for $199 EACH for every additional TV, or an extra $14/month rental for my two other TVs?
  • I have TekSavvy. Most plans are 300GB down/mo, upload not counted, and unlimited between 2am and 8am. All plans have an unlimited option as well, which is indeed unlimited. Speeds as advertised, consistently.

As a bonus, they'll stand up for your privacy!
  • Yeah, liking teksavvy a lot. When you say "upload not counted" does that mean you are paying for uploading, or that uploading does not count towards the 300 Gb? I am guessing the latter.
  • After getting my avr back yesterday from Denon after a two month wait to get the HDMI module replaced, I will hopefully be able to watch something on my TV again. I don't watch anything on TV unless it's at 720p minimum with full digital sound.

I've always streamed media from my pc to the home theater setup via a PS3. However, the PS3 may also be toast at this point.

Edit: PS3 is toast. You had a good run fella.

Strongly considering getting a WD TV Live as a replacement as I have no interest in replacing the PS3 with another game console. I don't play games on it anyways, so why spend $400 (or whatever the final bidding price was in the auction that was going on the other day).

Anyone have any experience with the WD TV Live? I think I remember Moose saying he had one. Considered the Live Hub, but I don't need the extra hard drive space it offers.

Can't wait to dig in to the electrical spaghetti and get everything reconnected.
  • TekSavvy looks better than my current Bell/cable services. What the best TV service for a family to pair with TekSavvy's Internet & phone services?

I don't have time to compare all the good alternatives mentioned in this thread yet, but maybe after WPT Montreal, to paraphrase "When Harry Met Sally,"
    "I'll have what Milo's having." ;)

How is it possible to use this much data in a month assuming you leave the house? Semi serious question :o
And noting that you don't watch any TV
